Comparing Drywall and Plaster for a Home

Drywall and plaster are standard options to finish a wall, but many homeowners need help deciding which to use and in what situation

Drywall and plaster are standard options to finish a wall, but many homeowners need help deciding which to use and in what situation. Nevertheless, this uncertainty requires thought before choosing one over the other. So here are the differences between these two materials:

Material composition

The most notable difference between plaster and drywall is the material composition. Plaster has been used since ancient times, although today's formula isn't what the Egyptians used. On the other hand, drywall is a much more recent product.

Plaster often contains gypsum. Before it's applied to the wall, one must secure a lath to the framing made of wood or synthetic materials. Once the framing is in place, a contractor will apply layers of plaster to the wall (usually three).

Drywall also contains gypsum, but it comes in sheets attached to the wall or ceiling via screws or nails. Since it's pre-formed before installation, installing drywall requires less time. After applying the drywall compound, the wall only needs time to dry.

Installation time

As mentioned above, one manually applies plaster in layers, which is much slower than installing drywall. Authentic plaster requires three layers; each layer must be completely dry before contractors can apply another layer. So, many homeowners prefer to avoid long waiting periods.

On the other hand, one can quickly install drywall sheets since they're usually cut to size and shape. Of course, the layers of drywall compound must also dry, but they don't need as much time as plaster.

Quality

While drywall takes less time to install, plaster usually yields a higher-quality wall. By default, plaster is much more durable than drywall. It even outclasses the latter regarding sound and temperature insulation and fireproofing. Mold can't grow on plaster walls either due to the material.

Sadly, drywall allows mold and other organisms to grow on its surface with sufficient moisture. As a result, it also needs to catch up in appearance.

Maintenance

Drywall is much easier to maintain, and homeowners with construction experience can even perform DIY jobs to prevent further damage. However, plaster is a complicated material that only professionals and experienced workers should handle. Unless one has the necessary expertise and knowledge, avoid maintaining plaster walls.

Cost

The time-consuming nature and specialized knowledge required to install plaster make it the high-end option. Labor costs, installation periods, and materials add to a costlier bill. However, drywall is less expensive because it takes less time to mount.
