What sheen level of paint is best?
The sheen level is the amount of gloss in the actual paint film. It is typically measured in percent shine with the lowest number a flat at 1 and up to high gloss 90. Below is a list of the standard sheen levels.
Flat paint which has your least amount of sheen at 1-9%. These paints are used in low traffic adult homes. Home with children will find flats hardest to clean. Vitually all ceiling are painted flat.
Eggshell paint has more shine at 10-20%. This is the most popular sheen level as it provided excellent cleaning without being to glossy. Typically used throughout the house on the walls with the exception of the kitchen and baths.
Satin paint is the next level up with 25 to 40% shine. As the sheen level goes up so does the durability. Bathrooms and kitchens benefit from the added moisture resitance as well aas commercial high traffic areas. Sometines satin is used on trimwork instead of semi gloss with customers who prefer a lower shine.
Semi gloss the sheen level goes up to 41 -65%. Most often used on trimwork and doors due to its great durability.
High Gloss this is the highest sheen level at 70 - 90 %. Often used to paint kitchen cabinet which experience a lot of wear and tear.
